The ultimate low-maintenance plant. Legendarily forgiving and air-purifying, Snake Plant thrives on neglect.
Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata), reclassified as Dracaena trifasciata, is legendary for surviving conditions that kill other plants. This succulent houseplant thrives on neglect, tolerates low light, and actively improves air quality by filtering toxins. With minimal care, Snake Plant produces attractive upright, sword-shaped leaves in solid green or with golden-yellow variegation.
What makes Snake Plant exceptional is not just survival, but its architectural impact. Tall, sculptural growth adds modern, minimalist aesthetics to any space. Its ability to thrive in offices, bedrooms, and bathrooms with limited light makes it perfect for challenging locations where other plants fail.
Scientific Name: Dracaena trifasciata (formerly Sansevieria trifasciata)
Common Names: Snake Plant, Mother-in-Law's Tongue, Viper's Bowstring Hemp
Origin: West Africa and India
Toxicity: Mildly toxic if ingested; contains saponins
Thrives in any light from low to bright. While it grows faster in bright light, Snake Plant survives indefinitely in corners with minimal illumination. Unique among houseplants for thriving in offices and interior rooms without windows.
The golden rule: underwater rather than overwater. Water every 2-4 weeks, only when soil is completely dry. Overwatering causes root rot—the only real threat to Snake Plant. In winter, water even less frequently or not at all.
Use well-draining, cactus-like potting mix. Add 50% perlite or sand to standard potting soil. Terracotta pots are ideal as they provide extra drainage. Snake Plant tolerates any container with drainage holes.
Ideal: 70-80°F. Minimum: 50°F; avoid cold drafts. Humidity preferences? Completely flexible. Snake Plant handles dry office air or humid bathrooms equally well. One of the most adaptable plants!
Fertilize 1-2 times yearly during growing season (spring/summer). Dilute fertilizer to half-strength. Snake Plant isn't a heavy feeder; annual feeding is often sufficient. Reduce further in winter.
Snake Plant propagates through leaf cuttings or division. Place individual leaves in soil and they develop roots in 4-8 weeks. Each successful leaf cutting becomes a new plant! See our propagation guide for detailed techniques.
